The UN rights chief said on Tuesday that empowering women and girls to participate fully in public life is both the right and \u201csmart thing to do\u201d, speaking on a day that saw history being made with the first ever address to the UN by a woman Vice President of the United States. \u201cSpeaking up, and contributing to decision-making, is the right of every human being \u2013 women, just as much as men\u201d, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet told the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women. \u201cIt is also a powerful lever for better policy \u2013 for everyone\u201d. She cited evidence demonstrating conclusively that where women are well represented in government, there is more investment in\u202fsocial protection and a better focus on\u202fclimate justice. Moreover, their participation in\u202fpeace talks\u202fis linked to more durable solutions while women in leadership in the private sector, leads to better\u202fbusiness performance\u202fon many parameters.<\/p>\n

The UN rights chief noted that during the\u202fpandemic,\u202fcountries led by women leaders adopted sound policies based on scientific expertise for the people\u2019s good \u2013 \u201cnot soundbites based on noisy drama and the interest of elites\u201d.\u202f \u201cWe cannot airbrush reality: women’s equal representation in political life is advancing very slowly\u201d, she said, adding that at the current rate, gender parity in national legislatures would not be reached before 2063, nor would the number of women and men heading Government be equal before 2150. The High Commissioner encouraged all leaders to\u202fappoint 50 per cent women\u202fto their Cabinets, ensure broader diversity and inclusion and harness the use of temporary special measures\u202fto, among other things, recruit and train women candidates and target women for positions in politics and government.<\/p>\n

Ms. Bachelet highlighted the need to work with women who fight for equality and social justice, many of whom are young activists\u202foperating in restricted civic spaces \u201cpatrolled by thugs and trolls\u201d. She advocated for more flexible funding, better support and an enabling environment where they can engage\u202fwithout undue restriction or fear of retaliation.
\nAnd there must be \u201cgreater investment to prevent violence against women in public life\u201d. \u201cAs a woman who has held a position of power, I am also aware of the taxing impact of toxic misogyny and sexism. It is vital to keep speaking out against it\u201d, upheld the High Commissioner.<\/p>\n

US Vice President Kamala Harris told the commission in a video address that \u201cthe status of women is the status of democracy\u201d. Along with other things, democracy protects human rights, upholds the rule of law and is a means to shared prosperity, in which everyone has an equal voice, she said, adding that it is a \u201cwork-in-progress\u201d that requires constant vigilance and improvement. Democracy\u202fis increasingly under great strain globally with \u201ca troubling decline in freedom\u201d, according to Ms. Harris, citing experts who believed that \u201cthis past year was the worst on record for the global deterioration of democracy and freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n
