Researchers have revealed that threatened birds have disappeared from almost 70 per cent of Australia since European colonisation.<\/p>\n<p>The study \u2013 led by The University of Queensland, Charles Darwin University, WWF Australia and Australian Wildlife Conservancy \u2013 mapped the pre-European (1750) habitats of Australia\u2019s most threatened birds, comparing those with current habitats. Dr Michelle Ward, from UQ\u2019s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and WWF Australia, said Australians should be extremely alarmed by the findings. \u201cA whopping 69 per cent of the country is missing some of its most enigmatic bird species,\u201d Dr Ward said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd 10 birds have become locally extinct from 99 per cent of their historical habitat, with their remaining habitats having become much more fragmented.\u201cAustralia is celebrated globally as having some of the most intact ecosystems on the planet, but there\u2019s been a mass local extinction of wild animals across much of the continent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince European colonisation, human activities associated with forestry, agricultural development, urbanisation and mining have been driving \u2013 and continue to drive \u2013 extinctions and diminish populations.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/news\/article\/2022\/02\/two-thirds-of-australia-has-lost-its-unique-birdlife\">Read more at: University of Queensland<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enn.com\/articles\/69679-two-thirds-of-australia-has-lost-its-unique-birdlife\">ENN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have revealed that threatened birds have disappeared from almost 70 per cent of Australia since European colonisation.
